About Nikki Barton

Nikki BartonNikki is a highly motivated Creative and Experience Director with 18 years digital media skills across a wide range of platforms worldwide. Combining a entrepreneurial streak with a strong commercial focus she is an inspirational leader with excellent communication skills and a passion for designing better user experiences.

Graduating from Reading University in 1989 with a BA (Hons) in Typography and Graphic Communication, her dissertation on Interactive Multimedia – then in its infancy - proved to be the catalyst for the future direction of her career.

After graduating she worked on the seminal TV documentary Hyperland, written by Douglas Adams, in which a software agent guides Douglas around a multimedia information landscape, examining (then) cuttting-edge research by the SF Multimedia Lab and NASA Ames research center, and encountering hypermedia visionaries such as Vannevar Bush and Ted Nelson.

Nikki then worked at the BBC’s pioneering Interactive Television Unit (ITU), which later became the MultiMedia Corporation. There she learnt the language of film and television and was able to contribute to some of the first interactive multimedia projects ever produced. In addition to her TV and multimedia work Nikki has worked on magazines, a feature length animation for TV, the feature films Mission Impossible and GoldenEye, and at Neville Brody’s Research Studios.

In 1997 she founded Nykris, and drove the company forward to its highly regarded position in the digital communications industry. Nykris was responsible for many highly acclaimed projects such as the ground breaking design of IE 5 for the Mac, the BAFTA award winning Tate website and interface for the Tate Modern handheld tour, ONdigital’s Electronic Programme Guide, the European interface for Microsoft WebTV, and ArtStart the National Gallery’s kiosk information system. At Nykris Nikki was involved with London Business School, profiled for Red Magazine in Women To Look Out For, a BIMA Executive committee member and a Non-Executive Director of OneWorld International.

She is currently Creative Director at Cimex Media and is (amongst other things) working on a social, open, web environment.

As an influential creative director Nikki has consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible with the media, understanding the technology but not being dictated to by its limitations. She has achieved international recognition for innovative work in the industry, judging awards, contributing regularly to publications, and speaking at industry events.
